However, Balor grew horrified by the slaughter. He made a truce with humanity: the magical folk would retreat into hidden realms, and humans would keep the surface world. Balor split the golden crown that controls the Golden Army into three pieces. One piece went to the humans, one to the elves, and one stayed with Balor. Prince Nuada, Balor’s son and a fierce warrior, despises the truce. He watches as humans destroy nature and magic fades from the world. When his father refuses to break the truce and wage war, Nuada kills him, takes his piece of the crown, and sets out to reclaim the other two pieces.

Long ago, humans and magical creatures (mythological beings like trolls, elves, and tooth fairies) lived together but fought a brutal, centuries-long war. The Elven King Balor created an unstoppable, mechanical army—the Golden Army —to destroy humanity.

Hellboy, Liz, Abe, and Johann follow. Inside, they face the massive, mechanical army. Hellboy fights Nuada one-on-one while the others battle the soldiers. Hellboy defeats Nuada but refuses to kill him in cold blood. Instead, he breaks the crown, causing the Golden Army to crumble to pieces.

Princess Nuala, knowing her life is magically linked to her brother’s (if one dies, so does the other), stabs herself to ensure Nuada cannot survive. Both twins die. In her final moment, Nuala shares a brief, tragic romance with Abe Sapien.
