Alex sat on the digital carpet. He could smell the fake pine of the tree. His father’s arm was around his mother’s shoulder. His brother handed him a second controller – the old one, the one that broke. “Good,” it said
“You have to go back,” the little brother in the memory said. “I’m not real. But he is.” He pointed to the real world – the basement, the sound of the divorce still echoing. It was blank – mirrored silver
On the basement TV, static resolved into a final message: “Zathura complete. New game available for: Your life. Press any button.”
He pressed it. Nothing happened. A pop-up appeared: “You cannot undo. You can only move forward. Press X to accept.”
