On the gurney in Bay 1 is a homeless man, “Jesse” (60s), known to the staff. He has end-stage COPD and a new fever. Robby checks his chart. Jesse hasn’t been seen in three weeks. His oxygen saturation is 82% on room air. Sophie smiles, small but real

He deletes it.

“That’s not from methane. That’s blast lung plus chemical pneumonitis. But these marks—” He pauses. “These look like microemboli from injected toxins. Troy, what were you really doing at that landfill?” Meningitis confirmed

“You’re in shock, kid. Sit down.”
