The air in the Vault smelled of burnt ozone and dust. Kaelen pulled his hood tighter, the flickering phosphor glow of his wrist-comp casting long shadows across rows of silent, humming data towers. He was an Archivist, Level 3, which in the hierarchy of the Great Library meant he was one step above the janitorial bots. But Kaelen could make out a room
At 89%, the screen flickered. The download window vanished. In its place, the video began to play—not in his media player, but across every screen in the Vault. The main monitor. The backup array. Even the tiny display on his coffee mug.
But he had never been photographed here.
The server was a relic itself—a black monolith from the 2020s, its fans whining like tired insects. Kaelen jacked in. The file appeared as a ghost: a blocky, pixelated thumbnail of a man in a grey suit smiling too widely. The resolution was so poor the man’s eyes were just two dark squares.
