Iain exhales. “Lizzie was my niece. My sister’s girl. We lost touch after she ran away. Catherine didn’t even know.” He looks Perez dead in the eye. “That’s the kind of secret you bury in Shetland. Deep.”
“It never ends, does it, Tosh?” Perez says quietly. “The blood.”
They stand in silence. The waves crash below.
FADE IN:
“Is it?” Perez walks past him into the lobby. “You knew Catherine Ross.”
“Cold. Blue.” His voice cracks, just for a second. “Who does that to a woman who only ever helped people?”
“Catherine found out about the trafficking ring years ago. She confronted Calum. He threatened her. Threatened me. Said he’d hurt our family.” Iain’s voice breaks. “So I paid him. For ten years. Silence money.”
The wind nearly rips the car door off as Perez steps out. The hotel is modernist, out of place among the peat and stone. Calum Brae meets them at the entrance, smiling.
