For all its historical importance, a long review must be critical. Playguy suffered from severe repetition. Unlike its European counterparts (e.g., Butt or Zipper ) which often celebrated the avant-garde or the waifish, Playguy ‘s brand DNA was distinctly American, sun-drenched, and athletic. The title was a direct play on Playgirl (and, by extension, Playboy ), suggesting a magazine that was about lifestyle and fantasy, not just anatomy.
