No longer a silhouette. It had form now: a tall being of shifting geometries, its surface a slow kaleidoscope of deep blues and golds. Seven eyes — or what served as eyes — arranged in a ring around what might have been a head. No mouth. Yet it spoke. You were not supposed to follow

The world went white. When his vision cleared, Elias was no longer in his cabin. He stood at the edge of a forest he didn't recognize — the trees were silver, their leaves dripping light like liquid mercury. Above, three moons hung in a triangle, and the ground beneath his bare feet was warm, pulsing, alive. No longer a silhouette

But something remained.

"Then why am I here?" Elias whispered.
