We met because we were both paying attention to the same film at the same time. That’s a kind of intimacy people have forgotten exists." "Lisa started talking about the 'performed identity' of the characters, and I started talking about the failure of the establishing shot," J explains. "We realized we were looking at the exact same thing but through two different lenses: sociology versus narrative craft."
"I was exhausted. I had just submitted a manuscript on digital intimacy and the last thing I wanted to do was stand around holding a plastic wine glass talking about cinematography," Portolan recalls with a laugh. "But a friend dragged me along, promising it would be 'good content.'"
