But there’s a human bomb in the room. Literally.

Michael plugs a modified device into Krantz’s arm-link. He has to “kill his number” — reroute the dead man’s switch’s signal through a loop, tricking the EMP into thinking the General’s heart is still beating. It’s delicate, dangerous work. Krantz, ever the snake, tries to negotiate, then taunts them. “You think this ends with me?” he snarls. “There’s always another number.” Michael succeeds. The device locks in. Krantz is neutralized. The data on Scylla is extracted and broadcast to every major news network in the world, exposing The Company’s crimes. The mission is accomplished. They have won.

The episode begins exactly where the penultimate chapter left off. Michael Scofield, his brother Lincoln Burrows, Sara Tancredi, Alexander Mahone, and the rest of the team are inside the monolithic, dystopian headquarters of The Company — a sprawling, sterile tech fortress known as "The Boardroom." They aren't here for money or revenge anymore. They are here to erase The Company from the face of the earth by destroying Scylla , the black book of covert operations, corrupt corporate alliances, and government secrets that has been the MacGuffin for the entire season.

The post-credits scene (which originally aired as the final minutes) offers catharsis, not a happy ending. Michael is dead. But his love lives on. His son will never know Fox River, or Sona, or The Company. He will only know the beach, the sun, and his mother’s smile. That is Michael’s greatest escape plan of all.

Sara, now his wife (they secretly married after escaping the Panama prison), begs him to let someone else take the lead. Lincoln, ever the loyal brother, offers to switch places. But Michael knows the truth: he is the only one who understands the complex code and the thermal override for the EMP. He is the only one who can do this.

Lincoln pounds on the glass. Sara screams his name. Through the small window, they watch Michael turn back to the control panel. The water is already swirling around his ankles. He calmly, deliberately, throws the switch. The escape door unlocks on their side. They are free.

Michael looks at Lincoln. He looks at Sara. He doesn’t say a word. He just looks at them, and they understand. This is what he was born for. This is the prison he was always meant to break out of — not a physical cell, but the prison of fate, of constant running, of always having to save everyone else.
