★★★½ (out of 5) Have you seen the unofficial sequel, “Journey to the Center of the Earth 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012)? That film is a separate adaptation featuring The Rock and Vanessa Hudgens, but it is not a direct narrative sequel to the 2008 Brendan Fraser film.

Sixteen years after the groundbreaking 3D adventure that first took audiences below the Earth’s crust, Journey to the Center of the Earth 2 finally drills its way back onto the big screen. The sequel, officially titled Journey to the Center of the Earth 2: The Next Depths , arrives with a new generation of thrills, higher stakes, and a surprising twist: Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, now all grown up) is the lead scientist on a mission to rescue his mentor from a previously undiscovered second layer of our planet. The story picks up a decade after the events of the first film. Sean Anderson has followed in his uncle’s footsteps, becoming a brilliant but reckless volcanologist. When a mysterious, ultra-low-frequency signal is detected coming from 1,200 miles beneath Iceland—far deeper than any previous expedition—Sean believes it’s a sign of a second subterranean ecosystem.

Accompanied by his estranged stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson, replacing the absent Brendan Fraser with muscular charisma), and the comic-relief tech expert Leonard (Luis Guzmán), Sean launches an experimental drilling vessel. But they are not alone. A rogue mining corporation, led by a ruthless executive (Emily Blunt in a scene-stealing villain role), follows them down, seeking rare minerals that could power the world—or destroy it.
