The prequel is presented as a flashback in Dexter’s mind as he lies near death, waiting for help. This framing device allows the show to have its cake and eat it too: a full prequel story with a ticking clock in the present. Showtime has already confirmed a New Blood sequel series ( Dexter: Resurrection ) starring Michael C. Hall, so Original Sin is effectively setting the stage for that revival.
