One night, with rain drumming against his window, Leo typed into his tablet’s browser:
Leo lived in a small, rain-slicked town in Galicia, Spain. His family didn’t have much money for imported games. While his friends moved on to the latest Nintendo Switch titles, Leo was stuck with his father’s old, scratched DSi. The console had a broken hinge and a faded Poké Ball sticker on the back.
He extracted the file. A single .nds file appeared: PKMN_BLACK_USA.nds .
The game resumed normally. But his Snivy’s name had changed. It wasn't "Snivy" anymore. It read:
Leo looked at his DSi screen. The game had restarted by itself. A new save file appeared. The player's name was — the name of the original owner. The trainer had six Pokémon, all level 100, all shiny. And they were walking toward Leo's character.
Over the next few days, Leo noticed the changes. NPCs in the game would stop talking about gym badges. Instead, they whispered things like, "The black cartridge doesn't like pirates" and "You took what wasn't yours, chico."
The DSi never turned on again.
