Meanwhile, Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) tries to teach the kids about holiday traditions around the world, but ends up accidentally sparking a debate about whether or not the holidays are “too commercial.” The episode’s title comes from the staff’s after-hours hangout at a hookah lounge — a brilliant, unexpected setting for a holiday episode. It’s here that the teachers let their guards down. Ava tries to impress everyone with her “connections.” Melissa and Jacob argue over whether hookah counts as smoking. And Gregory (Tyler James Williams), in a rare moment of vulnerability, admits he’s never really celebrated the holidays in a big way.
